J.R. Watkins Naturals: Hand Soap and Lotion

Watkins all-natural hand soap

We have soft water at our house, and when washing up after gardening or cooking I was finding myself rinsing and rinsing, trying to get that soapy feeling off my hands. This left me with dry, chapped, hands—not good.

J.R. Watkins hand soaps and lotions—all-natural classics.

J.R. Watkins Naturals to the rescue. I recently discovered J.R. Watkins Natural Home Care soaps at Santa Barbara’s Tri-County Produce. (You can also find them at Target, so when you’re perusing the aisles for new Missoni finds, you can stock up on great hand soap too! I heart Tarjée.) These soaps smell fresh but not too strong, and they’re non-toxic and biodegradable.

The orange citrus soap is wonderful. It thoroughly cleans my garden-grubby hands and doesn’t leave that soapy, filmy feeling behind. I’m also a fan of their mango hand lotion—it’s all-natural, paraben-free, dye-free, as well as free of a bunch of other potentially nasty stuff often found in soaps and lotions and cleaning products.

The J.R. Watkins credo: “Natural since 1868. And way too stubborn to change.”

Even the packaging is delightful, an acknowledgment of the company’s roots and traditions. The company was founded in 1868 and I’m a sucker for all things vintage (and easy prey for anything well-branded—Louis Vuitton, anyone?). And how could you not love a company that describes itself as “Natural since 1868. And way too stubborn to change.”? I am now happily stocked up on soap for the next year or two.
